Robert Whittaker vs. Paulo Costa booked for April 17!
Is Robert Whittaker a mad man? Aside from his title shot, the former middleweight champion agreed to take on another risky fight with Paulo Costa. After losing to Israel Adesanya, Whittaker moved on to defeat Darren Till and Jared Cannonier. So far, his only loss in the middleweight department was when he went face-to-face against the current champ. In an interview, Adesanya also set some lights on this rivalry.
In detail, The Last Stylebender stated that if Jared Cannonier could get past Whittaker, then he will be up for a title defense against Cannonier. However, Whittaker put a stop to his plan when he finished Cannonier. At that point, their rematch is already past due. Adesanya is trying to move up and get Jan Blachowicz booked for the Light-heavyweight title in the middleweight division.
Furthermore, accepting this matchup with Costa could being a big risk for Whittaker. If he loses the fight, there is a big chance he could end up like Tony Ferguson. On the other hand, his opponent also came out of a loss against Adesanya. Up to now, Costa needs to get back into the title contention race, and facing a former champion might give him the push. Among the top middleweight fighters, he only managed to score a win over Yoel Romero, who had been released by the promotion.
