Gilbert Burns on facing Khamzat Chimaev: ‘hard for me to say no to a fight!’
In case you didn’t know, Khamzat Chimaev has been steadily building his name in the welterweight department. Since his two appearances last year, Chimaev has become one of the hottest prospects in the promotion, especially after he defeated Gerald Meerschaert and Li Jingliang. For now, the question on his next opponent remained unanswered. From what we learnt, it seems like Gilbert Burns is up for the challenge.
However, the current No.3 ranked welterweight has mixed feelings on this situation. In a recent podcast, “Durinho” shared: “I don’t think I’ll fight him while he’s ranked at No. 10. He stated that if Chimaev could fight more and defeat a top-5 or top-6 in the welterweight ranking, then he could agree to such a match. He backtracked a bit after: “Top-10, I wouldn’t fight Chimaev.
But that’s me fighting against myself; I want to fight, so it’s complicated.” Moreover, Burns also set some lights on his rival suggestions: “I’ve asked to fight Neil Magny many times, who’s around No. 9”, but the promotion keeps stalling and deny him the fight. He listed the ranking situation as the main reason. Nevertheless, he “wants to fight so bad, it would be hard for to say no to a fight.” Additionally, Burns insisted that their match would be “the fight of the night” filled with trade, grapple, and takedowns.
The Hype Fight
While Chimaev isn’t the highest-ranked option for Burns, he understands that the clash will be one of his biggest matchups. “Aside from Kamaru, who’s also a very complicated fight for him, I think myself and Colby would complicate [things for] him.” As he’s looking for ways to stay active in the promotion, he would no doubt accept if the UFC offers.
