For a quick recap, we have finally received the information regarding the location of ‘Fight Island.’ Different from what we expect, the upcoming UFC 251 will take place on Yas Island is in Abu Dhabi. This time, Kamaru Usman will defend his title against Gilbert Burns after a year. On the other hand, June has been a tough week for the UFC, where they have encountered many dramas during the last weeks.
So far, four high-profile fighters in the promotion have raised problems with their contract disputes. It began when Henry Cejudo – the former two-weight champion announced that he would vacate the 135lb belt and retire. He later mentioned the reason being money. After that, both Jon Jones and Jorge Masvidal got into a heated spat with the UFC. Finally, Conor McGregor added the last shot.
The Irish fighter announced that he would be retiring from professional fighting, for the third time. McGregor later claimed that the reason being that the promotion had messed him too much. On the other hand, the promotion president has a different perspective. In a recent show, Dana White has shared his side of the story. “He wants to fight Gaethje. Gaethje just won to get the fight with Khabib. He just beat Tony Ferguson. Conor had the opportunity to slide into that spot if Khabib or Tony fell out. He came back and said, ‘I’m not a replacement fighter, I’m not going to do it.’ He would be in that position now if he took the fight. He didn’t, Gaethje did so Gaethje gets it.”
Nevertheless, from McGregor’s side, his fallout was due to the travel van on Europe of the United States because of the current health crisis. Besides, White continued: “Conor McGregor is frustrated right now; because I mean look what’s going on… We are a true global business. We’re the only one pulling off live sports right now. If I continue to do fights in the United States, I’m going to burn out all my American talent. Now we got Yas Island ready to go, it’s set up. This is just a matter of Conor being frustrated I think in that he can’t get what he wants right now. It’s just not possible.”
