Conor McGregor has eyes on Jorge Masvidal’s BMF title!
After the confirmation for his comeback match at the UFC 246 with Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, The Notorious has also laid out his plan for the year 2020. According to Dana White, the Irishman is hoping to have a busy year. As previously reported, he and his team are looking forward to hitting the cage three times in 2020. Asides the fight with Cerrone, he is aiming to avenge his loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov.
The UFC President also shared that McGregor’s first choice was to skip the Cerrone match and take on Nurmagomedov. However, as the later has booked a fight with Tony Ferguson at UFC 249; it would take a while for the lightweight champion to prepare for another fight. Many sources stated that Nurmagomedov won’t be ready to take the cage again until late summer or fall after he observes Ramadan in April and May.
On the other hand, White claimed that the Notorious is also interested in meeting Masvidal in the cage; as the later is getting ready to take a welterweight next month. “Conor has this idea, too, that if things don’t go his way and he [doesn’t] get the fight [with Khabib]; he will have had a 170 fight in his pocket again. He is considering a Masvidal fight,”. Nevertheless, the UFC president doesn’t think that this is a good idea. To explain, he replayed the message to McGregor: “I’m not saying you can’t beat Masvidal. Anybody can beat anybody on any given day, but why? Why go after that fight when you could just wait?”
The story behind
We can take a wild guess on why the Irishman suddenly wants to pursue the “BMF” title. Firstly, Masvidal scored the title with a lopsided win over Nate Diaz. Furthermore, while it was a special title that White created for this match, the UFC president had no intention to make Masvidal defend it. However, McGregor is now trying to play between welterweight and lightweight; so it seems normal that he would want to take on the currently BMF champion. “You’ve got to love the fact that a guy is willing to fight anybody. I’ve said this a million times, I’ll say it again, I’ve been in the trenches and when we’re standing the living room and fights pull out, Conor McGregor will fight anybody.”
